Otty Lake Management Planning

The Otty Lake Management Planning process was fortunate to be supported by the Lake Management Planning Program which received funding from the Community Stewardship Council of Lanark County, Rideau Lakes Environmental Foundation, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

With the release of this document, the Otty Lake community has reached another milestone in planning for the long-term health of our lake. The Otty Lake Management Plan is based on the information about the Otty Lake Watershed that was summarized in the Report on the State of Otty Lake and its Watershed. The Plan provides a roadmap of specific, measurable and achievable actions to address each of the concerns identified by the Otty Lake community gathered from a comprehensive consultation process with partner agencies and residents.

The Otty Lake Association would like to recognize the significant contributions of the Otty Lake community and all our community partners for their ongoing commitment to this important undertaking.

The Otty Lake Management Plan was completed with the assistance and guidance of the Lake Management Planning Program and the generous financial support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Community Stewardship Council of Lanark County, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Rideau Lakes Environmental Foundation and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

It is hoped, through the continued support of our volunteers and partners in the implementation of the Otty Lake Management Plan, the health of Otty Lake will be protected for years to come.

Background

In 2004 the Otty Lake Association and its members began the process of developing a Lake Management Plan to ensure the long-term health of Otty Lake.

One of the first tasks of the Otty Lake Management Planning Committee was to develop and distribute a questionnaire to identify what the lake community valued about their lake and what they identified as issues and concerns that would impact on the future of the lake. Community partners were also invited to participate in this process.

Decision makers and property owners needed to know the current condition of the watershed before recommendations to protect the lake could be developed. The Report on the State of Otty Lake and its Watershed provides a summary of the information the Otty Lake volunteers collected and describes what is currently known about the Otty Lake Watershed and how that information relates to the issues that are important to lake residents.

Based on the input provided by members of the Otty Lake community and the community partners, the Otty Lake Management Plan has now been developed with a set of recommendations that provide strategies to address each of the issues of concern as identified by the Otty Lake community. Implementation of the recommendations will result in the protection of the lake through education, stewardship action and land use regulation.

It is hoped that with the ongoing implementation of the Otty Lake Management Plan through the continued support of our volunteers and partners, Otty Lake will be protected for years to come.
