Fish Species Of Otty Lake

Otty Lake is home to many fish species including northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass and many types of panfish including black crappie, bluegill, sunfish, yellow perch. Below are descriptions of the species we know of. (These species are as identified by the iFish Ontario app for Apple and Android.)

		Black Crappie The black crappie is one of North America’s most popular panfish. A member of the sunfish family, crappies are often found in deep water, although not at the bottom. Crappies can grow to up to 3 pounds but average 12 to 24 ounces.
		Bluegill The bluegill, sometimes called the bream or brim is one of the largest members of the sunfish family. Highly popular with anglers, the bluegill make for excellent eating. Natural food include larvae, nymphs and adults forms or aquatics insects, plus snails, crustaceans, fish eggs and water weed.
		Bullhead Catfish Bullheads are are members of the catfish family and most easily identified by their long whisker-like barbels that protrude from the mouth of the catfish. The bullhead is a small catfish which grows to about 16 inches long.
		Cisco Also known as northern cisco, lake herring, chub or tullibee they can grow up to 5 pounds but are more commonly up to two pounds in Otty Lake. It is slender-bodied and silvery with pinkish iridescence on its sides.
		Common Carp The common carp has two pairs of barbels and a mesh-like scale pattern. While they can grow up to 85 pounds, they rarely reach 30 pounds in Otty Lake.
		Largemouth Bass The largemouth bass has a green tint with darker markings along each side. A popular sportfish, they are welcome catch. They can reach up to ten pounds but are rarely seen above 5 pounds in Otty Lake.
		Northern Pike Northern pike are one of the most popular sport fish in North America. In colour, pike are bronze to olive along the back with spots and blotches of dream which create excellent camouflage. Pike can grow up to 50 pounds but max out at 10 pounds in Otty Lake.
		Pumpkinseed Also known as the common sunfish, pumpkinseeds are often considered one of the prettiest pasfish in North America. Mostly olive green with flecks and spots of yellow and blue, and bright blue lines running from the mouth to the edges of the gills. Pumpkinseeds can grow to a maximum of 9 inches.
		Rock Bass Rock bass are similar in appearance to smallmouth bass but much smaller. They can be various shades of olive green and have rows of black spots on their sides with a very large red eye.
		Smallmouth Bass The smallmouth bass has a bronze tint with darker vertical markings. A popular sportfish, they can reach up to five pounds in Otty Lake.
		Sucker The sucker has an elongated, cylindrical body with large, generally silvery, scales. The snout is blunt and the inferior mouth has thick lips which have two or three rows of tubercles. They can grow up to 20 inches but are more commonly 8 to 12 inches.
		Yellow Perch A very beautiful fish, yellow perch are dark olive colour along the back, with golden flanks marked by a series of vertical dark bars and a white belly. Abundant in Otty Lake, they are considered an excellent eating fish.
